“Teflon coating” is one of the most searched car-care terms in India, and one of the most confusing. Many shops sell it as a cheaper ceramic. It isn't. Here's the difference so you know what you are paying for.

What “Teflon coating” usually means

Teflon is a brand name for PTFE, a slippery polymer. A “Teflon coating” at a car wash is normally a polymer sealant or polish with PTFE in it, applied after machine rubbing. It makes the paint slick and glossy for a while, then washes away.

What ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid based on silica (SiO₂) that bonds to the paint and hardens into a thin, glass-like layer. It is far more durable than a polymer sealant and keeps the paint glossy and water-repellent for years, not months, when it is applied on properly prepared paint and maintained.

Is Teflon coating bad for paint?

The sealant itself won't harm paint. The risk is the heavy “rubbing” that often comes before it: aggressive compounding with poor technique removes clear coat every time. Repeat it every few months and the paint gets thinner. If your car needs correction, it should be done once, properly — read rubbing vs paint correction.

Where graphene fits in

Graphene coatings are ceramic coatings with graphene added. Manufacturers such as Garware claim higher resistance to water spots and heat than standard ceramic (Garware's comparison). In hard-water areas and for cars parked in the sun, it's worth considering.
