“Rubbing polish” is what most people in India ask for when the paint looks dull or scratched. But rubbing, polishing and paint correction are different jobs with very different results — and the wrong one can thin your paint for nothing.
What each term means
- Rubbing (compounding): using an abrasive compound to cut away a thin layer of clear coat, removing scratches and oxidation. Effective, but it removes paint every time.
- Polishing: a finer abrasive step that refines the surface and brings back gloss. Removes light haze and marks left by rubbing.
- Paint correction: a planned, measured process — compounding and polishing in stages, panel by panel — to remove as many defects as possible while keeping enough clear coat. It's done with good lighting and, ideally, a paint thickness check first.
Why “rubbing every six months” is a bad idea
Clear coat on modern cars is thin. A quick rubbing job with a heavy compound makes the car shine for a few weeks, then washing scratches it again, and it gets rubbed again. Each round removes paint. After a few years there is nothing left to correct.
What actually removes swirl marks and scratches
| Problem | What fixes it |
|---|---|
| Dull paint, light haze | Polish only |
| Swirl marks from washing | One- or two-step paint correction |
| Scratches you can't feel with a fingernail | Paint correction, usually |
| Scratches that catch your fingernail | Often need touch-up or repainting; correction can only soften them |
| Bird-dropping etching, water spots | Correction, depending on depth |
Make the result last
Corrected paint looks its best for a long time only if it's protected. That's why we usually recommend a ceramic coating right after correction — it keeps the gloss and makes safe washing easy. See what ceramic coating costs.
Price at our studio
Paint correction starts at ₹4,999, because the work depends on your paint. A complete detail with a light polish starts at ₹4,499. We inspect the paint with you and confirm the price before starting — no surprise “extra rubbing” charges.
